Jain panel report submitted to govt

The controversial Jain Commission report on former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, which led to the fall of the United Front government in November, was presented to the government on Saturday.

The voluminous final report, running into several thousand pages, was handed over to Home Secretary B P Singh by Commission Secretary D R Luthra at his North Block office.

The Commission had submitted its interim report in August 1997 to Home Minister Indrajit Gupta and its observation on the Dravida Munnetra Kazagham's alleged links with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam made the Congress withdraw its support to the 10-month-old Inder Kumar Gujral government, resulting in fresh elections in the country.

The one-man Commission, headed by Justice Milap Chand Jain whose term was to expire on February 28, had sought yet another extension, but the Centre turned down its plea. Subsequently, the Commission finalised its report and submitted it to the government.
