DMK wins Pondicherry

For the first time the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam bagged the lone Lok Sabha seat from Pondicherry, beating the Congress.

DMK candidate and former minister Arumugam trounced Pradesh Congress president P S Hanmugam by a convincing 36,774 margin.

Pondicherry has been with the Congress since 1980, when it was an ally of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Breaking its alliance with the Congress, the AIADMK fielded its candidate after a gap of 21 years, but finished third. Six other contestants forfeited their deposits.
