BJP wins one, leads in 23 UP seats

The Bharatiya Janata Party has opened its account in Uttar Pradesh by bagging the Almora Lok Sabha seat. It is leading in 23 of the 34 constituencies, trends for which are available now.

The Samajwadi Party candidates are leading in eight constituencies and the Congress, the Samajwadi Janata Party and an independent in one each.

According to reports from Almora, Bachchi Singh Rawat of the BJP defeated Congressman Harish Rawat by a margin of about 80,000 votes.

The prominent leaders contesting in the state are former prime ministers Chandra Shekhar (Ballia) and Atal Bihari Vajpayee (Lucknow), Union Defence Minister and Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav (Sambhal) and former Union minister of state for external affairs Salman Khurshid (Farrukhabad).

Former chief minister and Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati, who had built an initial lead, is reported to be trailing her Samajwadi Party rival by a slender margin of 188 votes.
