AGP faces rout in Assam

The ruling Asom Gana Parishad is facing a rout in Assam while the Congress looks all set to sweep the state.

The Congress is leading in six of the 10 Lok Sabha seats from where trends are available. The AGP has been pushed to the third place in most of the seats in the Brahmaputra valley, while the Bharatiya Janata Party takes the second position.

The AGP is trailing in all the seats, losing at least three seats. The BJP is leading in the Guwahati seat -- over the Congress -- as well as in Barpeta.

Riding a strong anti-incumbency wave coupled with the United Liberation Front of Asom's aggressive anti-AGP posture, the Congress is making considerable gains in AGP strongholds like Guwahati, Nagaon and Kaliabor. The seats have been with the AGP till now.

The Congress is leading in Dibrugarh and Jorhat.

State Congress president Tarun Gogoi is leading over AGP rival Keshab Mahanta by a margin of over 29,504 votes; in Nagaon, the chief minister's wife Jayshree Goswami Mahanta was relegated to the third position. The Congress is leading with a margin of over 10,752 votes in that seat.

In the Guwahati and Barpeta seats, the BJP has established a surprise lead over its rivals. It is marginally ahead in Guwahati while in Barpeta the Communist Party of India-Marxist is trailing behind.

The BJP is set to improve its past performances in the Brahmaputra valley, coming second in at least five seats.

In Dhubri, Abdul Hamid of the Congress is leading by a narrow margin.
