BJP wins seven seats in Gujarat

The Bharatiya Janata Party has won seven of the 13 Lok Sabha seats declared from Gujarat and was leading in 12 other constituencies as counting in other constituencies in the state progressed today.

The Congress had so far bagged seven seats and was leading in one constituency. The Congress has retained most of the seats it has won this time.

The ruling Rashtriya Janata Party of Shankarsinh Vaghela had fared poorly and its candidates were trailing at third or fourth places in most of the constituencies.

Crowning the BJP success in the state was party president L K Advani in Gandhinagar who defeated his nearest rival, Congress candidate P K Datta by more than 275,000 votes.

In Surat, the BJP's Kashiram Rana recorded the highest victory margin till now, defeating Thakurbhai Naik of the Congress by 303,000 votes.

The Congress suffered a major setback when Youth Congress president Satyajitsinh Gaekwad lost to BJP nominee Jayaben Thakkar in Baroda. Another prominent leader, Sanat Mehta, lost the Surendranagar seat.

The BJP has so far won Gandhinagar, Surendranagar, Junagadh, Baroda, Valsad, and Bharuch seats.

The Congress has bagged Sabarkantha, Dohad (ST), Godhra, Kaira, Anand, Chhota Udaipur (ST) and Mandvi (ST) seats.
