Congress asks AP CM to quit

Andhra Pradesh Congress president Mallikarjun today demanded the resignation of Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu owning moral responsibility for the 'loss of the people's confidence in his government'.

Mallikarjun, who unsuccessfully contested against Union Information and Broadcasting Minister S Jaipal Reddy in Mahbubnagar, said his he was taking his defeat "in a philosophical way and as the peoples will".

Recalling the chief minister's statement that the outcome of the elections would be a referendum on the TDP government, Mallikarjun said the results show the people have 'rejected' Naidu's policies.

Mallikarjun demanded the dissolution of the state assembly and challenged Naidu to seek a fresh mandate.

Though he did not agree that the BJP had eaten into the Congress votes, he agreed that the BJP has become a force to reckon with.
