Congress wins 2, leads in 20 in AP

The Congress won two seats and was leading in 20 constituencies, while the ruling Telugu Desam bagged two seats and was leading in nine other constituencies as counting of votes continued. The Janata Dal won one seat.

The Congress retained the Rajampeta seat and wrested the Narsapur seat from the ruling TDP. However, the Congress suffered a severe reverse in the defeat of Pradesh Congress chief Dr Mallikarjun who lost to Union Information Minister S Jaipal Reddy (JD) in Mahabubnagar.

The TDP wrested the Amalapuram (SC) and Nizamabad seats from the Congress.

Among those leading was Union ministers K Yerram Naidu (Srikakulam) and Dr S Venugopalachary (Adilabad), BJP's Bandaru Dattatreya (Secunderabad), Vidyasagar Rao (Karimnagar), and film star-turned-politician U Krishnam Raju (Kakinada).

The TDP's poll allies, the CPI was leading in two constituencies and the CPI-M in Khammam.

While two of the three former chief ministers K Vijayabhaskara Reddy (Kurnool) and N Janardhan Reddy (Bapatla) were leading, N Bhaskara Rao was trailing in Khammam.

Two union ministers U Venkateswarulu (Bapatala) and B B Ramaiah (Eluru) are trailing.
