Akali-BJP combine may sweep Punjab

Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral today established a comfortable lead in Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituency, while the ruling Akali Dal-BJP combine was set to make a clean sweep of eleven of the 12 remaining parliamentary seats in Punjab.

Independent Satnam Singh Kainth, supported by the Akali Dal, was also leading in Phillaur (reserved) constituency over his nearest BSP rival Harbhajan Singh Lakha.

According to the trends available now, Gujral is leading over his nearest Congress rival Umrao Singh by more than 55,000 votes.

The Akali Dal is leading in Faridkot, Ferozepur, Sangrur, Ropar, Bhatinda, Ludhiana, Tarn Taran and Patiala constituencies, while its ruling partner BJP was leading in Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur.
