BJP government will not last long, says Bardhan

Communist Party of India general secretary A B Bardhan today said the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government at the Centre would not last long and would collapse under the "weight of its own sins".

Addressing a press conference in Bhopal, Bardhan said the BJP had promised to provide stability and able administration, but its 100 days in office proved otherwise.

When asked whether his party would support the Congress in forming a government of secular forces if the Vajpayee government falls, he said the Congress was yet to make up its mind on the issue. ''Once they take a decision, we will decide about our future course of action,'' he added.

Reacting to the formation of the Rashtriya Loktantrik Morcha, he said there was nothing wrong in the realignment of secular forces. He said the Morcha has already announced that it would oppose the BJP.

Bardhan, who was in Bhopal to inaugurate the national workshop of the All India Youth Federation, criticised the BJP government's practice of sending central teams to states to review the law and order situation, and described it as an attempt to blackmail and destabilise the elected state governments.

Referring to the repeated statements of Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha that sanctions imposed by the United States and other countries following the nuclear test would not cause any impact, the CPI leader alleged that those who had been talking about Swadeshi, were now giving facilities and concessions to multinationals through the backdoor.

He alleged that several such concessions were granted during the last 20 days even after the developed countries imposed sanctions against India.
