53 die in Jammu bus accident

With the recovery of more bodies, the death toll in the bus accident at Nandni in Jammu and Kashmir, about 25 kilometres from Jammu, has risen to 53.

An official spokesman said a crowded bus on its way to Jammu from Udhampur skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge at Nandni on Friday evening. All the 15 injured passengers have been admitted to the Jammu medical college, where the condition of several is stated to be very critical. Most of the victims were part of a marriage party.

The bus was totally submerged in the gorge, making it difficult for passengers to get out, the spokesman said.

This is the second major accident in Jammu during the past week. As many as 13 people were killed when a bus skidded off the road and rolled into a 200-feet gorge near Peera, Batote, on June 18.
