Heatwave deaths touch 1,531 in OrissaWith 43 more deaths reported during the past 24 hours, the toll in Orissa due to heatwave has shot up to a mammoth 1,531. Of this, 17 people died in Dhenkanal, 16 in Cuttack and 10 in Sambalpur. As many as 1,897 people are still being treated in various hospitals and nursing homes. Over a thousand people died in coastal Orissa alone, reports said. The heatwave, one of the worst ever the state has faced this century, played havoc in almost all the coastal districts. Dhenkanal district has accounted for 367 deaths so far. It is followed by Cuttack with 248 and Nayagarh with 67. The other coastal districts where the heatwave had taken a heavy toll in the past fortnight are Kendrapada (50),Jajpur 56), Jagatsinghpur (50), Khurda (49) and Angul (49). In western Orissa, Sambalpur district was the worst-hit with the toll going up to 145. The heat claimed 105 lives in Balesore district of North Orissa. Heatwave conditions also prevailed in parts of Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh and coastal Andhra Pradesh. Day temperatures were appreciably above normal in parts of Vidarbha, Telangana, Rayalaseema and the remaining parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh, and were above normal in parts of Saurashtra and Marathwada. They were markedly below normal in Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, North Rajasthan and parts of the plains of West Uttar Pradesh. They were appreciably below normal in South Rajasthan and Northwest Madhya Pradesh. Heavy rains are likely at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Konkan, Goa and Kerala during the next 48 hours. The southwest monsoon has been vigorous in Assam and Meghalaya, and active in coastal Karnataka. Rain or thundershowers occurred at most places in Kerala, at many places in Andaman and Nicobar islands, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Konkan, Goa and Marathwada, at a few places in Punjab, West Madhya Pradesh and interior Karnataka, and at isolated places in Gangetic West Bengal, the hills of West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, West Rajasthan, Saurashtra, Kutch and Tamil Nadu. Rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places in Andaman and Nicobar islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Konkan, Goa, coastal and south interior Karnataka and Kerala, at a few places in the hills of West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, North Rajasthan, South Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, north interior Karnataka and Lakshadweep, and at isolated places in Gangetic West Bengal, coastal Orissa, South Rajasthan, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Mainly dry weather will prevail over the rest of the country.
