CBI files FIR against Jaffer Sharief

The Central Bureau of Investigation has filed a first information report in a special court against former railway minister C K Jaffer Sharief for misusing his official position to send four people to London without any official assignment.

The FIR, filed in the court of Ajit Bharihoke last week, states that Sharief illegally took four of his personal staff to London where he underwent a heart surgery in August 1995. Sharief was allowed only an attendant and cardiologist to accompany him.

It says Sharief asked the managing directors of Railway India Technical and Economic Services Limited and the Indian Railway Construction Company to accommodate three officials as staff on deputation.

B N Nagesh, the then additional private secretary to Sharief, S M Mastan and Murlidharan, both personal stenographers, were accordingly absorbed by RITES and IRCON, the CBI says.

All of them were sent to London for almost the same duration as Sharief's stay, the FIR says. Samaullah, a domestic help, was also made to travel with him for the same period at IRCON's cost.

The CBI has alleged that the former railway minister abused his position as a public servant and caused a loss of Rs 750,000 to the public undertakings.
