Mahajan quits as prime minister's aide

Pramod Mahajan has resigned as political adviser to Prime Minister A B Vajpayee following his nomination by the party to the Rajya Sabha, official sources said today.

Sources said Mahajan submitted his resignation to Vajpayee on June 5, when the Bharatiya Janata Party chose him as a candidate for the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra.

Mahajan, as the PM's political adviser, held the rank of a Cabinet minister.

He had to resign since holding the post of political adviser to the prime minister will be construed as an office of profit and hence liable for disqualification from the Rajya Sabha.

The resignation has been accepted by the prime minister.
