Pakistani troops fire mortar shellsPakistani troops resorted to unprovoked mortar shelling and firing on Indian positions in Uri sector early this morning, and a militant was among the three killed in the Kashmir Valley over last night. Official sources said Pakistani troops fired at least three mortar shells on Indian positions at Asham and Lalpul area in Uri sector around 8 am today. Pak troops also resorted to firing with automatic weapons from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. Indian troops retaliated and the exchange of fire continued till 9.30 am. The sources said there was no report of any casualty or damage to property on the Indian side, and that casualties suffered by the Pak troops were not known. People at Bandipara took to the streets today when the body of Gulam Nabi Baba was handed over to his relative by the police. The demonstrators alleged that Baba and another person, Ghulam Mohammad Reshi, were arrested by the forces few days back. An official spokesman said militants attacked a patrol party at Dera Sangal with automatic weapons. The patrol party also returned fire, and in the shootout a militant was killed and two security personnel got injured. He said militants entered the house of one Chumail Singh in village Glanoo Gandi and shot dead his son Punjab Singh last evening. He said the forces averted a major tragedy when they defused a five grenade at Bagyas Chattabal in the down town city last evening. He said unidentified militants set on fire houses on Abdul Ahmad Mir and Ghulam Mohammad Mir at Laweypore and Neik Alam Khatria at Khatapora Lolab last evening. He said two militants surrendered along with two AK-56 rifles, one grenade and 240 rounds at Malangam in Baramulla last evening. UNI |
