Jaswant Singh, Pramod Mahajan, Arun Shourie in fray for RS poll

Planning Commission deputy chairman Jaswant Singh, political advisor to prime minister Pramod Mahajan and senior journalist Arun Shourie are among the 12 Bharatiya Janata Party nominees for the Rajya Sabha election to be held on June 18.

Senior BJP leaders including party president Kushabhau Thakre, Prime Minister A B Vajpayee and Home Minister L K Advani met at the party headquarters this evening to finalise the candidates for the Rajya Sabha as well as legislatures in some states where the elections are scheduled to be held.

The names finalised for the Rajya Sabha election are those of columnist Dinanath Mishra, party general secretary Sanghpriya Gautam, former Comptroller and Auditor General T N Chaturvedi, former Censor Board chief and VHP leader Ashok Singhal's brother, B P Singhal, former Indian Express editor-in-chief Arun Shourie (all from Uttar Pradesh), P K Aggrawal (Bihar), Dilip Singh Judeo, BJP vice-president O Rajagopal (both from Madhya Pradesh), former Indian high commissioner to London Dr L M Singhvi, Jaswant Singh (both from Rajasthan), Pramod Mahajan (Maharashtra) and G Madhusudhan (Karnataka).

For the Uttar Pradesh and Bihar Vidhan Parishad polls, the party approved the candidature of Kalraj Mishra, Aziz Rizvi, Ram Prasad Kamal, Sunder Singh Baghel, Veer Sen Sirohi, Ram Swaroop (all from Uttar Pradesh), Mahavir Biswakarma and Sarju Rai (both from Bihar).
