Arudra passes away

Wellknown Telugu writer, research scholar and lyricist "Arudra" nee Bhagavatula Sivasankara Sastri, died of renal failure at a private hospital in Madras this morning.

He was 73.

He is survived by his wife Ramalakshmi, who is also a wellknown writer, and four daughters.

Arudra, who was among the frontline writers in Telugu literature, was also a music and dance critic.

His most famous works include Tvamevaham, a collection of poetry, a 12-volume treatise on Telugu literature Samagraniva Sahityam and Sini Vali.

Arudra had penned about 4,000 songs when Telugu cinema was at the height of its glory from the 1950s to the 1970s.

He was the last of the team of poet-lyricists with Sri Sri, Acharya Athreya, Devulapalli Krishna Sastri, all of whom passed away before him.

He was conferred the Sahitya Akademi awards by the Central as well as the Andhra Pradesh governments.
