Southwest monsoon sets in over KeralaThe southwest monsoon set in over Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu today, with most parts of Kerala receiving good rainfall and providing a welcome relief to the people from the blistering summer heat. The normal date for the monsoon to set in over the state is June 1. However, in the last two years, the monsoon arrived only on June 8 or 9. Weather personnel predict that the state would receive a normal rainfall during the current southwest monsoon. The rainfall received during the monsoon last year was seven per cent more the the normal 215 cm. The Met office has predicted that the monsoon will arrive on time in Uttar Pradesh, a normal arrival of the monsoon in Uttar Pradesh on June 20, a respite finally seemed in sight from the intense heat wave sweeping various parts of the country. The heat wave continued unabated. The intense heat wave conditions sweeping through Andhra Pradesh claimed 40 more lives today, taking the toll to 403, during the last fortnight. A Rajahmundry report quoting revenue sources said the toll had risen to 196 in East Godavari district with 40 more deaths reported from the region. State revenue authorities here said East Godavari district accounted for the maximum number of deaths -- 137 -- due to sun stroke, followed by Nalgonda (54), Krishna (34), Srikakulam (32), West Godavari and Nellore (31 each), Karimnagar (26), Guntur (10), Visakhapatnam (6) and Kurnool (2). Most parts of the Telangana and Rayalaseema regions continued to reel under heat wave conditions. Uttar Pradesh recorded three more deaths while one more person succumbed in Rajasthan to the the heat wave which has claimed more than 900 lives till now. The severe heat wave also to persist over Orissa, the plains of Uttar Pradesh, and parts of eastern Rajasthan. The Orissa government today ordered senior health officials to take all the necessary steps for the treatment of sunstroke patients in the hospitals. Reviewing the prevailing heatwave conditions at a high-level meeting today, Chief Minister J B Patnaik directed all district collectors to provide compensation to the next of kin of the sunstroke patients and launch a massive awareness campaign, through the print and electronic media, to educate the people about the heat spell. In Kerala, Kayamkulam recorded the heaviest rainfall of nine cm today, followed by Alapuzha (six cm), Kochi and Chalakudy (five cm), Kunnamkulam, Kumarakom and Vaikom (four cm each), and Hosdurg and Kannur (three cm each). According to the weather bureau, heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and the Lakshadweep Islands during the next 48 hours. Heat wave conditions also prevailed in Haryana, east Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, north Tamil Nadu and interior Karnataka. Day temperatures were appreciably above normal in coastal Orissa, Gujarat region, Konkan and Goa, coastal Karnataka and were above normal in Gangetic West Bengal and Saurashtra. They were normal over the rest of the country outside Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab from where data available was sparse. Rain or thundershowers have occurred at most places in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, at many places in Assam and Meghalaya and Lakshadweep, at a few places in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura and south interior Karnataka and at isolated places in west Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Mainly dry weather prevailed over the rest of the country.
