Militants bomb Army Intelligence office in Jammu

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

In a serious development, militants bombed the Army Intelligence office at Jammu, killing two people including a soldier. Three others, including an army major, who were seriously wounded in the blast have been admitted to hospital.

The explosion at the heavily guarded Army Intelligence office at Bakshi Nagar in the heart of Jammu city on Monday afternoon killed an informant on the spot and wounded four others. The injured were immediately shifted to hospital where one solider succumbed to his injuries. The condition of the major is said to be critical.

No terrorist group has admitted responsibility for the blast.

The incident follows Sunday's killing of the brother-in-law of former Union minister of state for home Mohammad Maqbool Dar.

The police have no word about the fate of Ghulam Nabi Dar, Maqbool Dar's elder brother, who was abducted by militants from his village Shangus Nowgam in the southern Anantnag district. A massive hunt has been mounted to trace Dar.

A report from Mendhar in the troubled Poonch district said that four people, including three Hindu villagers, were missing from their homes.

A police spokesman in the state capital said one army JCO, who was seriously wounded in a mine blast along with 18 other soldiers at Swani in Poonch two days ago, died on Monday.
