Contempt proceedings against eight Calcutta imams stayed

The Supreme Court today stayed contempt proceedings against eight imams, that were pending in Calcutta high court. The imams had violated the Calcutta court's order banning the use of microphones during prayers (azaan) in the mosques.

The stay order was passed by a three-judge bench, comprising Chief Justice M M Punchhi, Justice K T Thomas and Justice S S M Quadri, while fixing August 10 as the date for hearing their special leave petition.

On July 15, 1997, the high court had ruled in favour on a public interest petition on noise pollution and issued prohibitive orders in respect of the calls of azaan through microphones in the mosques in Calcutta. This was the order that the imams had violated.
