BARC director accuses US of double standards

Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Director Dr Anil Kakodkar has accused the US of double standards, saying the so-called champions of human rights were not able to protect the rights of scientists.

Referring to the US decision to expel Indian scientists against the background of the Indian nuclear tests, the BARC director said the scientists who were sent back to India had actually got invitations from that country.

Thus sending them back is a kind of a breach of contract, Dr Kakodkar said. ''I am not perturbed but it might affect the morale of these scientists,'' he said. "Those scientists had nothing to do with the tests here, as they had gone to America to do fundamental research as part of postdoctoral work," he added.

The scientists had gone there either on a fellowship for one or two years or in an individual capacity to do research at various universities. However he clarified that BARC had no official collaboration with any university in the US.
