AIADMK will support BJP candidate for LS deputy speaker

The All India Anna DMK will support the Bharatiya Janata Party's nominee for the Lok Sabha deputy speaker's post.

This was conveyed to Prime Minister A B Vajpayee who telephoned AIADMK leader J Jayalalitha on Friday morning seeking the AIADMK's support.

Vajpayee sought her support for his party's nominee and she offered the AIADMK's support, a party statement added.

Jayalalitha also raised the issue of the Centre notifying the draft scheme for implementing the Cauvery dispute tribunal's interim award before the August 12 deadline set by the Supreme Court.

The prime minister expressed hope that an amicable settlement would be reached at the meeting of the chief ministers of the riparian states convened by him in this regard.

When Jayalalitha told Vajpayee that Karnataka had not changed its stand in the last seven years and asked him how he expected it to change now, the prime minister was quoted as saying that what was possible would be done.
