British high commission tells Indian atomic scientists they aren't welcome in London

The United Kingdom's deputy high commission in Madras has decided to refer to London the visa applications of all Indian atomic research scientists.

The decision came to the fore when Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research director Dr Placid Rodriquez and Dr Baldevraj, the director of its metallurgy and materials group, applied for visas.

In a virtual rejection of their applications, the high commission in a letter to them said: "As you are aware, our current policy for dealing with visa applications from those involved in atomic research is that the application must be referred to London for a decision."

The two scientists were invited by the Elsevier publishers in the United Kingdom to participate in a meeting of editors.

Dr Baldevraj had filed his application on June 15 while Dr Rodriquez had followed suit on June 20, according to IGCAR sources.
