Chief justice of Calcutta HC resigns

Chief Justice of Calcutta high court, Prabha Shankar Mishra, has resigned citing "very personal reasons."

Chief Justice Mishra said his resignation, tendered on May 2, would be effective from Wednesday. He was due to retire next month.

He said the decision to resign had been made quite some time back. "Actually I tendered my resignation on May 2 itself," he said.

Asked what had prompted him to take the decision, he said the reason was "very personal."

According to sources, the chief justice had made the decision after he was superseded by Justice Umesh Banerjee as a Supreme Court judge.

The chief justice said he would leave for Delhi on Saturday or Sunday from where he would go to Patna, his native place. He had not yet decided what he would do next, he said.
