Women's bill still hangs fire

Confusion continued to prevail in the government over the fate of the Women's Reservation Bill.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today told newsmen that the government will bring forward the bill after reaching a consensus with all political parties, and that it wants to introduce the bill in the current session of Parliament itself.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Madan Lal Khurana said the government does want to bring forward the amended Women's Reservation Bill but the Opposition parties should initiate the dialogue. He said last time Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Rashtriya Janata Dal president Laloo Prasad Yadav came forward to discuss the issue with the prime minister, so they should again come for a discussion on amending the bill.

On whether the government was ready to grant reservations on religious/communal line as demanded by some Opposition parties, Khurana negatived the idea.
