Postal services hit for third day

Postal services across the country remained paralysed for the third day today as employees continued with their strike in support of their 10-point charter of demand.

Claiming that the strike was near total in Delhi, a spokesperson for the strikers said the response from other states like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and West Bengal was ''encouraging".

He said the employees were awaiting a call from the government for negotiations.

In Parliament yesterday, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Communications Minister Sushma Swaraj had made statements that the government would make every effort to hold negotiations and consider the demands of the employees sympathetically.

The demands include implementation of the Justice Talwar committee recommendations on extra departmental agents and rejection of all adverse recommendations, improvement of pay scales for group 'D' employees at the entry point, upgradation of payscales for drivers, workshop staff and stenographers and finalisation of bonus formula.
