Heptulla makes it four in a row, RS deputy chairperson again

Najma Heptulla was re-elected deputy chairperson of the Rajya Sabha for the fourth consecutive term today.

With the Rajya Sabha chairman Krishan Kant presiding, prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee present, Heptulla's name was first proposed by leader of the Congress in the House, Dr Manmohan Singh and seconded by his party colleague Pranab Mukherji.

In all, there were 20 proposals favouring Heptulla. Leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the House, Sikandar Bakht, made the second proposal which was seconded by Vijay Kumar Malhotra. Eighteen other proposals were made and seconded.

Soon after this, Krishan Kant declared her elected as deputy chairman amid thumping of desks.

A beaming Heptulla, clad in a grey sari, was then led to the seat reserved for the deputy chairman.

The entire Rajya Sabha congratulated Heptulla, now into her fourth successive term. Vajpayee, Krishan Kant and Dr Manmohan Singh led the members in hailing the election of Heptulla.
