Telugu Desam walks out of RS over farmers's suicides

The Telugu Desam Party, an ally of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition, walked out in the Rajya Sabha today alleging inept handling of the farmers's suicide issue by the Central government.

There was a sharp reaction from the Left parties when Minister of State for Agriculture Sompal, replying to a calling attention motion on the farmers's suicide issue, mentioned the need for better land management and consolidation of holdings and said the West Bengal government is against this.

Communist Party of India's Gurudas Dasgupta, who initiated the debate on the issue, immediately protested and said that the calling attention motion is to discuss the problems of the farmers which forced them to commit suicide in several states. How does the question of better land management and consolidation come in, he asked.
