Women's Bill will not wait for consensus: PM

Prime Minister A B Vajpayee announced in the Rajya Sabha on Monday that the Women's Reservation Bill will be introduced in Parliament even if there was no all-party consensus on it.

Vajpayee said that the BJP government was committed to the passage of the Bill.

Responding to agitated women members, Vajpayee said that it had been decided to introduce the Bill in this session. However, some members had conveyed that they wanted some provisions of the Bill to be reconsidered.

He said that an all-party meeting will to held on June 10, and that he was hopeful that a consensus would be arrived.

He made it clear that the government's view was that even if there was lack of consensus the bill should still be introduced.

Agitated women members wanted to know the government's stand on the bill.
