17 killed in Kashmir

Three Pakistani infiltrators and eight foreign militants were among 17 people killed, while forces captured three militants in the Kashmir valley during the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, Pakistani troops fired on Indian positions in Mendhar sector last evening.

Official sources said one more foreign militant was killed at Furmuth Nar today. The operation was still in progress, the sources said.

Unconfirmed reports said three securitymen were also killed in the clash.

Meanwhile, Pakistani troops resorted to firing on Indian positions in Mendhar sector last evening. Other areas affected due to the Pak firing included Kirni, Shahpur, Nakerkot, Dagwar and Karmara. However, there were no reports of any casualties or damage to property due to the firing.

The firing continued for several hours with Indian troops also retaliating.

Meanwhile, Indian security forces gunned down three militants when they sneaked into India from across the border in Manjakot in Rajouri district last evening, according to an official spokesperson.

Giving details about the two-day long encounter at Gurmuth-Nargali in Baramulla, the spokesperson said troops killed nine militants, including seven foreigners.

He said the troops also recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition and 300 grams of heroin. This is for the first time that security forces has recovered heroin from militants in the past nine years of militancy.

Militants shot dead one Kushi Mohammad at Manigah in the frontier district of Kupwara last evening.

A blast took place at Pantha Chowk near a petrol pump last evening. However, there were no casualties.

The spokesperson added that the forces captured three militants and recovered seven disposable rocket launchers, ten kg of RDX, four remote control devices, four detonators, 14 rockets, one pistol, three magazines and five rounds in the Kashmir valley during the operations.
