Warrant issued against Suresh Prabhu in bank fraud case

The Ernakulam judicial first class magistrate court today issued a non-bailable warrant against Union Environment and Forests Minister Suresh Prabhu in a bank cheque fraud case.

The NBW was issued on the basis of a complaint preferred by one Dr K Joseph, in which he had alleged that a cheque for Rs 2,09,896 issued by the Bombay-based Western India Financial Services Limited where Prabhu is chairman and managing director had not been honoured by the Ernakulam branch of the Karur Vysya Bank.

The cheque issued on November 14, 1996 was for the short-term deposit of Rs 200,000 collected from him by the company following an agreement that it would be repaid with interest, he stated.

Despite sending a lawyer's notice there was no response either from the financial company or Prabhu, the complainant said.

Hence, he had approached the court and sought remedy under section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act and section 420 of the Indian Penal Code.

Though the court had issued summons on various occasions, the accused failed to appear before the court and the case was posted for August 21.

Meanwhile, in Thiruvananthapuram, Communist Party of India-Marxist state secretary Chadayan Govindan demanded that Prabhu resign immediately following the issuance of the NBW against him.
