The Southwest monsoon has claimed three more lives in Kerala, taking the rain-related death toll in the state to 42.

A 32-year-old man was killed and his wife and four children injured when a tree fell on their house near Mankulam in Idukki district, early Thursday.

An electricity board employee was drowned while taking bath in an overflowing temple tank at Moozhiyar in Pathanamthitta district.

Another was washed away by the flooding waters of Onipuzha in Kozhikode district, Thursday evening.

The monsoon, meanwhile, is raging in the state.

Reports from various parts of the state said torrential rain, accompanied by strong winds, has caused extensive damage to standing crops and public property.

Revenue department sources said that a total of 420 villages and 15,000 people have been affected since June 1. As many as 618 families have taken shelter in the 28-odd relief camps set up in different parts.

Around 315 houses were damaged resulting in a loss of Rs 15.7 million. Damages to standing crops accounted for Rs 100 million, sources said.

The state government has declared an assistance of Rs 15,000 to each of the families whose dwellings have been destroyed. Rs 5,000 would be given to those whose houses have suffered partial damage.

Meanwhile, the monsoon has also been active in Himachal Pradesh, Saurashtra, Kutch, Konkan, Goa, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telengana and interior Karnataka.
