JD to support a Congress govt

Former Union minister and senior Janata Dal leader S R Bommai today said his party would support the Congress in forming a government at the Centre provided the President invites it after the fall of the A B Vajpayee government.

Addressing the media in Hubli in Karnataka, he said this was to fight communal forces. The Vajpayee government would fall due to the internal crisis created by the Bharatiya Janata Party's allies.

Expressing hope that the President might not favour a snap poll, he said the Congress would be invited to form government.

Asked about the Dal accepting Sonia Gandhi as prime ministerial candidate, he said the Congress itself was yet to decide on it.

A mid-term poll would be inevitable -- probably this November -- if the Congress failed to take the initiative, he added.
