Don't attack Iraq, Gujral tells US

Prime Minister I K Gujral says India will not tolerate another attack on Iraq.

Addressing a United Front rally in Calcutta today, he said he had written letters to United States President Bill Clinton and leaders of those nations having permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council on Friday night to this effect.

"An attack on Iraq would destabilise the peace in the West Asian region where more than 2,500,000 Indians live. If there is an attack on Iraq, their lives will be endangered. We cannot allow this,'' Gujral, who famously embraced Iraqi President Saddam Hussein during the Gulf War, added.
