SC refuses to extend CBI chief's term

The Supreme Court today refused to modify its judgment, directing the Centre not to extend Central Bureau of Investigation Director R C Sharma's term which expires on Saturday.

Dismissing Sharma's plea for the modification, a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice M M Punchhi, Justices S P Bharucha and M Srinivasan said, ''The Union government's stand is that it has decided to obey the SC's orders as they stand today. Therefore, the supposed rights of Sharma for the extension of his term have been whittled down.''

The direction regarding non-extension of Sharma's term had been issued by a three-judge bench headed by the then chief justice J S Verma in its judgment dated December 18 last. It also granted greater autonomy to the central investigating agencies, and laying down the mode of the appointment of their heads.
