16 killed, arms cache recovered in KashmirThe Border Security Force and the Jammu and Kashmir police Special Task Force have in a joint operation recovered sophisticated weapons and mortars from a hideout in the Lolab valley, Kupwara district. The cache of arms, the police said, was to be used to disrupt the Republic Day celebrations in the valley. Elsewhere, 11 militants, including a foreigner and four security personnel, were among the 16 killed in the past 24 hours. Security forces captured two militants during overnight operations. Three others surrendered. A BSF spokesman said the arms seized included 11 AK-56 rifles, six rocket launchers, 15 rockets, five rocket sights, four heavy machine guns, one sniper rifle, six grenade launchers, 35 grenades, two 61 mm US-made bombs with a range of 1,800 metres, nine 107 mm heavy shells, 48 fuses, four antipersonnel mines, four anti-tank mines, 180 detonators, 41 remote control devices, 20 timers of improvised explosive devices, one 60 mm mortar shell and 8,300 rounds of ammunition.
