HC restrains parents from agitating against school fee hike

The Delhi high court on Wednesday directed the parents's body, protesting against the recent school fee hike, to refrain from holding street agitations and putting up posters while the matter was in court.

The bench also restrained the schools from taking any disciplinary action against students not paying the hiked fee.

Justices Y K Sabharwal and M K Sharma were hearing a bunch of petitions for and against the hike in school fees. The Delhi Abhibhawak Mahasangh, a body representing parents of students of various public schools, had filed a public interest litigation seeking a direction withdrawing the 'exorbitant' fee hike. Subsequently, several public schools, under the banner of the Action Committee for Unaided Public Schools, petitioned the court defending the hike on the grounds that it had become inevitable.

The division bench said considering the far reaching effects of the case, it deserved to be heard as early as possible. However, the early hearing would depend on the attitude the parents adopt.

To the submission of counsel R P Bansal, appearing for the DAV Public School management, that posters and banners were being put up relating to issues likely to come up before the court, the bench made it clear that till such things stopped, no hearing would take place.

Ashok Aggarwal, the counsel for the Delhi Abibhawak Mahasangh, assured the court that no such agitation would take place again.

The bench said as an individual a parent may do whatever s/he wished, but coming out on the streets would only go against their case.
