Bodo militants gun down 16 villagers

Suspected National Democratic Front of Bodoland militants massacred 16 people, including nine women and two minors, and injured two others at Kekorakuchi village in Kamrup district on Tuesday night.

The militants fired indiscriminately from automatic weapons when the villagers were having a community feast on the occasion of Uruka on the eve of the Assamese Bhogali Bihu, the harvest festival. All 16 died on the spot.

Among the victims was a five-year-old boy.

This was the first incident of militants killing people on a festive occasion.

State Higher Education Minister Thaneswar Boro, Revenue Minister Zoii Nath Sarma and the home secretary visited Kekorakuchi. Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta reviewed the situation with civil and police officers from Guwahati.
