Cold wave continuesWith district authorities in Patna directing all schools to remain closed till January 14, school children have got a welcome respite from the biting cold which has so far claimed more than 100 lives in Bihar. The cold wave sweeping the state for the last fortnight has affected surface and air transport, throwing life completely out of gear. "Almost all long distance trains are running late," officials said, "Road transport has been reduced to a crawl." Patna airport sources said all flights have been delayed due to early morning fog in most parts of north India. State Minister of Forests and Environment Arjun Mandal said steps have been taken to provide firewood to the poor in remote areas to help them survive the cold. Chief Minister Rabri Devi has directed the authorities to give all possible relief to those at the mercy of the elements. Meanwhile, animals at the Sanjay Gandhi botanical garden have been provided with heaters, and their cages covered with husk. Agriculturists said the cold wave has put back paddy transplantation and damaged seedlings. "Winter paddy production could fall short of the target," they warned. UNI |
