High court notice to Brar, Bhattal

The Punjab and Haryana high court has issued notices for February 26 to the Punjab government and former chief ministers H S Brar and Rajinder Kaur Bhattal for allegedly misusing funds during their tenure.

The division bench comprising Justices Amarjit Singh Chaudhary and P K Jain were acting on a public interest litigation filed by veteran Punjab Communist Party of India leader Satya Pal Dang.

Dang alleged that Brar and Bhattal had redirected funds meant for flood and relief work for other purposes. His petition contains details of a report which Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal tabled in the state assembly last month in reply to a question from CPI MLA Hardev Arshi. Accordingly, Rs 20 million from the chief minister's relief fund were disbursed to the Chandigarh Press Club, Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, army hedquarters, Chandi Mandir, Bar Association and various Mahila mandals.

The petition sought a detailed Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the matter as the actions of the ex-CMs amounted to 'criminal breach of the trust of citizens who directly or indirectly donated the funds'.
