Storm over new Chief Justice ends

The controversy over the appointment of the next Chief Justice of India has ended with Justice Madan Mohan Punchhi's elevation to the top job.

Justice Punchhi has been appointed by President K R Narayanan on the recommendation of Chief Justice J S Verma who retires on January 18.

The recommendation was delayed following a storm kicked up by a memorandum submitted by several top advocates.

Levelling serious allegations against Justice Punchhi, the legal luminaries opposed his elevation. However, the Supreme Court Bar Association stood by the senior-most apex court judge.
