SC okays creation of pollution control authorityThe Supreme Court today cleared a proposal by the Union government for constituting an environmental pollution (prevention and control) authority for the national capital region in view of an alarming increase in the pollution levels in New Delhi. The proposed authority, to be headed by former bureaucrat Bhure Lal, would deal with all the aspects of environmental pollution. The proposal was cleared by a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice J S Verma, Justices B N Kirpal and V N Khare after draft scheme in this regard was submitted to court by Attourney General Ashok Desai. Desai said a notification would be soon issued constituting the authority. Other members of the authority will be Central Pollution Control Board chairman D K Biswas, Delhi Transport Commissioner M S Kiran Dhingra, Centre for Science and Environment's Anil Aggarwal and Maruti Udyog Executive Director Jagdish K. The court said in view of the clearance now given to the proposed authority an earlier court order of September 13, 1996 appointing Justice R K Shukla (retired) of the Allahabad high court as the head of a committtee would stand modified. All the work done by the Justice Shukla committee would stand automatically transferred to the new authority. UNI |
