Dalai Lama to hold talks with Chinese for Tibet's freedomThe Dalai Lama says he will hold a dialogue with the Chinese government to secure freedom for Tibet. "This is necessary as the United Nations has failed to adopt any resolution to resolve the crisis, despite several appeals from the Tibetans," he told newsmen at the Bylakuppe Tibetan camp, about 90 from Mysore. "Though the UN had made efforts in the sixties and in the eighties in this regard, no breakthrough was possible," the Tibetan spiritual leader said. He said several conditions laid down by the Chinese government, such as Tibet should be accepted as part of China and cessation of the independence movement, were not acceptable to him. He said the Tibetans would settle for an autonomous state and would not press for separate nationhood. The Dalai Lama said he was concerned over the increasing population of Tibetan refugees in India and said efforts were being made to have alternative settlements for them. UNI |
