Exit Poll: Major parties gain in small north states

All the major national parties have gained in north India, at the expense of others, that is, the Independents and the state registered parties, as per the Doordarshan Exit Poll.

The exit polls covers Punjab (13 seats), Haryana (10 seats), Himachal Pradesh (4 seats), Jammu and Kashmir (the one seat out of six went where polls have been held), and the Union territories of Delhi (7 seats) and Chandigarh (1 seat).

The exit poll shows the BJP winning the maximum number of seats at 17 (a gain of 3); the Congress bags 13 (3 more than earlier), and United Front garners 4 (a gain of 1). Others -- the Akali Dal (Badal) and Haryana Lok Dal, for instance -- will make up the remaining five, a loss of seven seats.
