Punnapra Vayalar uprising recognised as part of freedom struggle

The Union government has recognised the Punnapra Vayalar uprising and five other struggles in Kerala as part of the national freedom movement.

The other incidents granted recognition are the Kayyur, Kavumpayi, Arivelloor, Morazha and Malabar special police struggles.

An official release in Thiruvananthapuram said the Kerala government had received an intimation to this effect from Union Home Minister Indrajit Gupta.

The Centre's decision followed the continued representation made by the Marxist-led Left Democratic Front government headed by E K Nayanar.

The recognition makes the participants of the uprisings eligible for the Centre's freedom fighters's pension.
