Probe reports not tabled as Maharashtra Houses adjourn

E-Mail this report to a friend

The presentation of the reports of the Dani Commission and Gundewar Commission before the legislature was shelved again due to the adjournment of both houses of the legislature without transacting any business Wednesday, as a mark of respect to veteran freedom fighter and former minister Ratnappa Kumbhar who died early today.

The tabling of both the reports was listed on the agenda. While the Dani Commission probed the 1994 stampede deaths of 114 Gowari tribals in Nagpur, the Gundewar Commission inquired into the police firing on Dalits in Bombay's Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar in the wake of the desecration of Dr Ambedkar's statue last year.

The tabling of the Dani Commission was listed on the agenda of the legislature last week but the government had sought more time.

The Opposition was quick to allege that the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party government was delaying the presentation of these reports as the findings were politically inconvenient to it.

Chief Minister Manohar Joshi and Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde, however, have asserted that the government would table both the reports, along with action-taken-reports, during the current session itself.
