E-Mail this report to a friend

Law Minister M Thambidurai introduced in the Lok Sabha today the Election Laws (amendment) Bill, 1998, seeking to permit members of the central armed forces to cast their votes either in person or through postal ballot system or through the system of proxy.

According to the statement of objects and reasons of the bill, the government has considered the recommendation of the Election Commission to allow proxy vote instead of postal ballot for members of the armed forces and hence formulated the legislation.

The bill seeks to amend the Representation of Peoples Act, 1951, and the Indian Penal Code, to achieve these objects.
