Pondicherry speaker ejects entire opposition

E-Mail this report to a friend

The entire opposition in the Pondicherry legislative assembly were evicted on Tuesday for stalling proceedings after Speaker V M C Sivakumar allowed a confidence motion from Chief Minister R V Janakiraman.

The opposition -- comprising the Congress, All India Anna DMK and Pattali Makkal Katchi members - agitated for nearly an hour. They later moved to the speaker's podium, shouting slogans against him for ruling that the confidence vote would be taken up first, followed by the no-confidence motion forwarded by the Congress.

As soon as the obituary references were taken up, Congress member A V Subramanian stood up and demanded that the no-confidence motion be taken up first. However, the speaker gave preference to the confidence motion.
