Bill to amend Marriage Act

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Rajya Sabha Monday adopted by a voice-vote the Marriage Laws (Amendment) Bill 1997, which seeks to remove from the Marriage Act epilepsy as a ground to seek divorce or annul marriage.

Moving the bill, Union Law Minister M Thambidurai said epilepsy was mostly curable. Many women's organisations had favoured the amendment, he added.

Nearly all the members who spoke during the occasion said the amendment would save many marriages. They said epilepsy could not be equated with lunacy as it has been earlier.

They stressed the need for a comprehensive bill to be brought in as the Marriage Act has already been amended three or four times.
