Delhi HC enquires about health of Quackery Bill

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Delhi high court on Friday directed the Sheila Dixit government to state whether it intended bringing in a fresh anti-quackery bill.

The Delhi Quackery Prohibition Bill, 1997, had expired after the dissolution of the state assembly.

A division bench comprising Justices Y K Sabharwal and K S Gupta asked the Delhi government standing counsel Arvind Nigam to place the new government's stand on the issue by January 18.

The bench also impleaded the newly-formed Delhi Medical Council in the public interest petition filed by the Delhi Medical Association, seeking a ban on the practice of allopathy by practitioners of other systems of medicine, and action against the 30,000-odd quacks in the capital.

A show cause notice has been issued to DMC for clarifying its stand on the PIL.

Nigam informed the bench that the bill had expired after the dissolution of the house. Hence a decision would have to be taken afresh.

The submission came after the high court expressed serious concern over the delay in passing the bill on December 10.
