ASSEMBLY POLL '98

Don't get too big for your boots, BJP tells TDPAndhra Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party president Ch Vidyasagar Rao today said the Telugu Desam Party should have no illusions of having become a major player in national politics. He pointed out that the TDP is supporting the BJP-led government at the Centre for its own compulsions. Addressing the media in Hyderabad, Vidyasagar Rao said the TDP government in Andhra Pradesh is distancing itself from the poor by pursuing hi-tech policies. Development works for the poor have taken a back seat because of the emphasis on computerisation and other pro-rich programmes, he said. Rao announced the setting up of three party committees, to be headed by Krishnam Raju, MP, Professor Seshagiri Rao, and J Sathyanarayana, respectively, to study the problems of tribals in the state, the use of the Godavari waters, and implementation of the 73rd and 74th amendments to the Constitution. He also demanded action against the printer and publisher of a poster in Rajahmundry town, saying it hurt the sentiments of Hindus. UNI |
